Choosing a reliable contractor is the most important consideration you can make, because no matter how well made a furnace or air conditioner is or who manufacturers it, the comfort, reliability and energy efficiency that equipment provides is still in the hands of the company doing the installing.  Remember: What they charge is less important than what kind of job they do, how honest they are and how they treat their customers.

Make sure your heating and cooling contractor has the proper insurance licenses. Did you know that when you hire a contractor who is not properly licensed and bonded, you in fact become the general contractor and are not only responsible for any damage to your home, but are also liable if the technician gets hurt while working on your home.

Make sure your heating and cooling contractor offers workmanship guarantees (not just manufacturer warranties). This will protect you from shoddy installation procedures.

Ask about an ironclad guarantee. A lot of heating and cooling contractors do not warranty their work. Make sure you get a 100% satisfaction or your money back guarantee. There is no reason to do business with any company that does not offer this type of guarantee! You cannot lose with this kind of guarantee!

A reliable company should ask you if you're experiencing any existing heating or cooling problems with your old equipment. They should then offer understandable solutions on a clearly written proposal that should include more than one type of furnace or air conditioner choice with different energy savings, and accessories such as humidifiers, electronic air cleaners and an improved filtering system.  They should also offer more than one choice of financing. Their proposal should list all the work to be done and the agreed-upon price.

A properly trained and competent contractor knows that more than half of a new heating and cooling system’s rated efficiency actually depends on the condition of your ductwork. Run from any contractor that provides you with a proposal for new heating and cooling system without first testing the duct system for any pre-existing hidden problems.

Their company representative should be professional, prompt, courteous, neat, and well groomed. This will reflect in their vehicles and offices.

They should have an office/shop facility and not be ashamed to have you visit them.

How a company treats you now reflects how they will treat you when there is a problem.
